Bread & Butter

For the first time, we took advantage of the YMCA Friday Night Movie Night. 6:30-9:30, $20. Waaaay better than the going rate of SF babysitters. As I was signing him in, C ran off in search of his friends. He disappeared into a room off the hallway where I suppose the pizza/salad/movie festivities were roiling. This evening's flick was, "Spirit". I vaguely recall that it's about a horse; probably not C's first choice.

We see other parents and friends racing out into the night, hoping to make the most of their three hours. Some had reservations at new hotspots in town, others like us, pulled  u-turns and headed to the new Mecca of dining, Valencia Street between 17th and 22nd. As often happens, the location of the parking space determines the restaurant. Fortunately for our palette, we found a spot across the street from Range (slightly less fortunate for our wallets).

A sparkling rose brut for me and the evening's specialty drink for M (rum w/ citrus fruits and nutmeg). We dined at the bar and countered the chilly night with roasted chicken and beef braised in wine. There were three bartenders in the tiny space. One woman impressed with her double-handed shaker mixing and pyrotechniques. Another fellow with tight blonde curls treated us to a wine tasting to determine which wine I'd have w/ my beef. M "accused" him of having a mic in his ear where he was being fed wine statistics and anecdotes. I chose the one made from the grapes of an Italian vineyard boarding Slovenia.

It was good to be out, and what a gift to be in this incredible bread basket - SF.
